The MURPH Challenge: More Than a Workout

Every Memorial Day weekend, gyms and fitness communities across the country come together for one of the most respected workouts in fitness culture: the MURPH Challenge. At first glance, it looks like a grueling test of endurance and mental toughness. But for many people, MURPH represents something much deeper than fitness. It is a tribute, a tradition and a way to honor sacrifice through movement.

This year, on May 25th, Vigor Mvmnt in Columbia will host a Memorial Day MURPH event where participants can take on the challenge together as a community. Whether you complete the full workout or modify portions of it, the goal is not perfection-it is participation, effort and honoring the meaning behind the workout.

At Focus on Health Chiropractic, supporting veterans and helping people move better through challenges is something that deeply aligns with the meaning behind the MURPH Challenge. The workout reflects resilience, discipline, teamwork and perseverance; qualities that are also at the core of recovery, rehabilitation and long-term health.

What Is the MURPH Challenge?

The MURPH Challenge is a workout created in honor of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005 during Operation Red Wings. Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage and selflessness. Before his deployment, this workout was reportedly one of his favorites.

The traditional workout consists of:

  • 1-mile run

  • 100 pull-ups

  • 200 push-ups

  • 300 air squats

  • 1-mile run

Advanced athletes often complete it wearing a weighted vest, but that is not required. In fact, many people scale or modify the workout based on their fitness level, injuries or experience.

That is one of the reasons MURPH has become so powerful. It welcomes everyone. Some participants complete the workout exactly as prescribed, while others break it into smaller sections, reduce repetitions or simply come to support the atmosphere and community. The challenge is personal, and every effort counts.

What Does MURPH Symbolize?

While MURPH is physically demanding, the true purpose is remembrance.

Memorial Day is about honoring military members who gave their lives in service to the country. The difficulty of the workout serves as a reminder that sacrifice often comes with discomfort, hardship and perseverance. During those moments when the workout feels difficult, participants are encouraged to reflect on the meaning behind it and the people it honors.

That is why MURPH has become more than just another fitness event. It creates a unique atmosphere where people push themselves alongside others for something greater than individual achievement. There is encouragement between strangers, shared struggle and a sense of gratitude woven into every rep.

For many people, crossing the finish line is emotional. Not because of the physical exhaustion alone, but because they realize they were part of something meaningful.

The Connection Between MURPH and Focus on Health Chiropractic

At Focus on Health Chiropractic, movement is viewed as an essential part of health, recovery, and resilience. Challenges like MURPH highlight how important it is to build a body that can adapt, recover and continue moving through physical and mental obstacles.

Just like the MURPH Challenge, rehabilitation and healthcare are rarely about quick fixes. Progress often requires consistency, patience, and determination. Whether someone is training for an event, recovering from pain, rebuilding strength after an injury or simply trying to improve their quality of life, the process involves overcoming challenges step by step.

That mindset is something the team at Focus on Health Chiropractic values deeply. Supporting veterans, active individuals and members of the community means helping people continue doing the things they love while building confidence in how their body moves and performs.

MURPH also reinforces the importance of community support, something that is central to healthcare and fitness alike. No one succeeds completely alone. Encouragement, accountability and guidance can make a huge difference during difficult moments, both inside and outside the gym.

Why Community Matters During MURPH

One of the most special parts of the MURPH Challenge is the community environment surrounding it. Unlike traditional competitions, MURPH is not necessarily about who finishes first. It is about showing up, supporting one another and moving together.

At gyms around the country, you will see experienced athletes working beside beginners, walkers beside runners and people of all fitness levels encouraging each other to keep going. The shared challenge creates connection in a way few workouts can.

That community aspect is exactly what makes events like the one at Vigor Mvmnt so impactful. Functional strength and conditioning gyms thrive on teamwork, motivation and accountability, and MURPH embodies all three.

Whether someone is chasing a personal best or simply trying to complete their first mile, everyone contributes to the energy of the event.

Memorial Day MURPH at Vigor Mvmnt

On May 25th, Vigor Mvmnt will host a full Memorial Day MURPH event in Columbia. Participants will receive an event shirt upon entry and will have the opportunity to complete as much or as little of the workout as they choose.

That flexibility is important because MURPH should be accessible to everyone. Some athletes may complete the entire workout exactly as written, while others may partner up, scale movements or focus on portions of the challenge. There is no single “right” way to participate.

The event is designed to bring people together through movement while honoring the purpose behind Memorial Day. Whether you are a longtime gym member, an experienced athlete or someone looking for a meaningful challenge, the event offers a chance to be part of something bigger than a normal workout.

More Than Fitness

At its core, the MURPH Challenge is not really about pull-ups, push-ups, squats or running. It is about remembering sacrifice, building community and pushing beyond comfort for a meaningful reason.

This Memorial Day weekend, the event at Vigor Mvmnt offers the Columbia community an opportunity to come together, move with purpose and honor those who gave everything in service to others.

At Focus on Health Chiropractic, that same spirit of resilience, movement and support continues every day through helping individuals overcome challenges, improve performance and continue living active lives.

Whether you complete one round, half the workout or the full MURPH, showing up is what matters most.
